Why did you decide to study at The School of The New York Times?

365体育备用网址My friend did a course last summer and said it was amazing and she met some of the most driven and friendly people, so when I was looking for things to do this summer, I knew I had to apply for The School of The New York Times to see if she was right. She was.

Which course did you take and why?

I took Public Policy and Activism at the DC campus. Something I have always been interested in is social justice, so the word activism automatically caught my eye. When I was looking at the course description, I realized this would be a really good way to learn more about a future option for a career path I could take that would channel my passion in a real world setting.

If you had to name one thing that you learned from your time here, what is that one takeaway that will stay with you?

365体育备用网址I learned about how much compromise goes into our political system because of the way it is laid out and how it has evolved due to the projects from the class and the personal stories we heard from our speakers.

What was your favorite site visit?

Our class visited the Human Rights Campaign building and talked to some people there. It was my favorite because we heard from people who weren’t even that much older than us who were doing something they were passionate and driven about. It was hopeful.

Who was the most memorable guest speaker?

365体育备用网址When learning about creative activism, the Monopoly Man came and visited us. He is somebody whose activism has sparked conversation and piqued the interest of people who aren’t usually avid subscribers to the wrong doings of Equifax. It was really cool to see the thought process of someone so accomplished and then have him look at our plans and projects we were working on.

What were your faculty like?

365体育备用网址All of our faculty were well-versed in what we were learning and had many experiences that we could learn from. Our lead instructor was very passionate and had a big personality which was interesting to learn from, especially with her first hand experience working for HRC and other interesting organizations. Our other instructor and ARA were both really nice and approachable and great resources to aid us through the course and in other things that popped up along the term.

What does The New York Times mean to you?

365体育备用网址The New York Times is reliable because I can expect that every morning before school I can expect a podcast from the Daily to tell me what I need to know that day.

What does it mean to you to study in Washington DC?

365体育备用网址I studied in DC, so it was really cool to be in a place where we could take a metro to senate and house buildings. It was also really cool to be learning about public policy in the heart of the place that enacts it into law.

What do you think you want to be when you grow up?

365体育备用网址I have no idea what exactly I want to do, but I think this term gave me clarity that I definitely want to do something that incorporates social justice and activism, maybe through public policy or within or outside the system.
