Why did you decide to study at The School of The New York Times?
It was recommended to me by a friend, so I started looking into the School of the New York Times and found out it offers a multitude of classes. They were all incredibly appealing, each involving multiple facets of the city, making the city a classroom in many ways. It sounded sounded perfect.
Which course did you take and why?
365体育备用网址I took Writing the Big City, and my classes were in the Fordham University building. All of courses looked incredible, but the journalism course was exactly what I’d been looking for to improve my writing and capabilities in journalism.
If you had to name one thing that you learned from your time here, what is that one takeaway that will stay with you?
365体育备用网址One thing of importance I learned is how educational just walking around New York can be. If you look hard enough as you take the subway or explore the city there are little stories everywhere. Especially as someone who values journalism, understanding this made my two weeks all the more transformative.
What was your favorite site visit?
Being in the Writing in the Big City course, we specifically focused on sustainability as a topic for our writing. Because of this, our site visits surrounded this topic, including a visit to some community gardens around the Lower East Side. Talking to experts on the gardens and seeing for ourselves the kind of spaces people had created in the nooks and crannies of New York made this site visit my favorite.
What were your faculty like?
The faculty for my course were phenomenal in every way. They really made learning a hands on experience, we rarely were sitting in a classroom the entire day. They always had an upbeat attitude and represented well the wisdom they had gained from their years of work.
What does The New York Times mean to you?
365体育备用网址After the School of the New York Times, I hold the newspaper itself in an entirely new light. To me it means more than straight news, it means the reason for news itself: informative thinking. Always placing a high emphasis on the importance of education, educating people in general, but especially the youth.
What does it mean to you to study in New York City?
Like I said earlier, New York is really an experience, more than that, it is a learning experience. To study in New York City meant understanding beyond the tourist, looking at the layers and facets of a truly bustling city.
What do you think you want to be when you grow up?
365体育备用网址I don’t have an entirely clear idea, but high on the list is a journalist— at least something that involves informative writing.
