Why did you decide to study at The School of The New York Times?
365体育备用网址When I was discovered Summer Academy, journalism had only recently entered my life, and I already liked it. Summer Academy was the perfect opportunity for me to explore the field and learn from the best journalists in the country. I went from liking journalism to loving journalism in just two weeks. And seriously, is there a news organization out there more qualified to lead a summer program than The New York Times?
Which course did you take and why?
I took Writing the Big City on the New York City campus. The class is centered around reporting. I love how it taught tips and tricks for basic skills like interviewing and article formatting, but also gave us plenty of time to actually explore the city. Before coming to the program, I’d only ever interviewed teachers and students for my school newspaper. In New York, I had the opportunity to interview people right on the streets. It forced me to overcome difficulties that I would not have encountered at my school. This taught me that in the professional world, things are not always handed to you on a silver platter.
If you had to name one thing that you learned from your time here, what is that one takeaway that will stay with you?
It was fascinating to have an insider’s look at how The Times is constantly evolving and improving based on audience data and analytics. It reminds us just how critical it is to observe societal changes over time.
What was your favorite site visit?
My final project was an article set in Harlem, a piece that centered around interviewing Harlem residents. I spent days there learning about its history and culture and truly got to know the people there. I’m so grateful for the connections that I made in Harlem, whether it was with my classmates in our buddy system or my interviewees. It was hard for me to leave.
Who was the most memorable guest speaker?
365体育备用网址Jonathan Wolfe spoke to the class about his work with The New York Times, and from the speech I gained a deeper understanding of what it means to be a journalist. I learned about how a journalist can be tasked with finding story ideas every day, and how they can walk into a parade and walk away with an interesting story idea that has never been done before.
What were your faculty like?
The lead instructor that I had is a Senior Editor at The Times. I could see all her experience in everything she did, especially when editing my piece. It was interesting to hear her personal anecdotes about reporting on the streets, which always enhanced our lessons.
What does The New York Times mean to you?
The New York Times is like the epitome of journalism. It is made of people who are experts in what they do, who take the world’s stories and collectively produce such a successful newspaper. I think that’s really something special.
What does it mean to you to study in New York City?
This program was like a vacation to New York City and an intense academic setting all in one, which was awesome. It was refreshing to end a day of classes with a trip to Central Park or the nation’s largest food festival.
What do you think you want to be when you grow up?
Before attending Summer Academy, I knew I wanted to pursue something in the Humanities, but had no idea what options were out there for me. After our tour of the New York Times building, however, I feel much more confident that journalism is a path worth taking. It would be a dream to end up somewhere like the Times. Even if journalism is not in my future, I feel no less confident walking out of Summer Academy that I eventually want to write things that impact the people around me.
