Why did you decide to study at The School of The New York Times?
I saw SoNYT as an opportunity to expand my horizons, to meet people my age from all over the country, and to challenge myself.
Which course did you take and why?
I took the Future of Fashion course in NYC. I was considering a career in fashion journalism, and I couldn’t think of a better place to learn about the fashion industry than the fashion capital of the world, New York City.
If you had to name one thing that you learned from your time here, what is that one takeaway that will stay with you?
SoNYT taught me to never settle and to constantly push myself. This program surrounded me with top students from all over the world, and getting to know who they are and the way they think made me excited about the future of our generation.
What was your favorite site visit?
I loved visiting the Brooklyn Fashion and Design Accelerator. It was so exciting to learn about the ways Tara St. James and her team are innovating. The visit inspired many garments for the collection I designed as part of the class.
Who was the most memorable guest speaker and why?
We were lucky enough to visit Vanessa Friedman, the chief fashion critic at The New York Times! As an aspiring fashion journalist, I am so inspired by the way she uses fashion as a lens to discuss broader cultural and political issues. I am grateful for the opportunity to listen to her story and to ask for her advice.
What does The New York Times mean to you?
365体育备用网址I look to The New York Times when I want a comprehensive, honest take on today’s events and issues. I look to The Times to keep me informed, to give me the confidence that no one can accuse me of ignorance. I look to The New York Times for dependable, truthful, persistent news coverage, and so far it has not let me down.
What does it mean to you to study in New York City?
As a kid from the suburbs of the South, I had only seen New York City in photographs and movies. I was afraid that I had romanticized the city and that it could never live up to my expectations. It did not only meet my expectations: it exceeded them. The energy of this town infected me, pushed me, and empowered me. If there’s one thing I want to take home from this program, it is that momentum.
What do you think you want to be when you grow up?
365体育备用网址Before SoNYT, I was not sure what I wanted to do for a living. Now, I know my calling is journalism, in some form. I’m not sure what shape this path will take, but I know that I want to tell stories, to give a voice to the overlooked, and to shed light on issues some would rather leave hidden.
