Gibson, Student

365体育备用网址Gibson is a Summer Academy student from Hoboken, New Jersey and took our course, "Fashion/Food Culture/Film."

Which course did you take and why?

I took “Exploration: Fashion/Food Culture/Film” because of my love for all three topics.
Fashion, to me, has always been a way of self expression like no other. You can tell a lot about a person based on the way they dress, and I was really interested in why clothes are made the way they are and what influences fashion on a large and small scale. Film, however, is something I love to interact with on a consumer level, but I didn’t know a lot on how to make a movie and all the things that go into making a film, whether it be writing the script or getting the right lighting for each scene or editing it all together.

What are your key takeaways from the course?

365体育备用网址If there was one thing I took away from my course, it would definitely be to be open to new things and don’t be afraid to put your ideas out there. In all three modules there seemed to be one thing in common, collaboration of ideas, thoughts, and opinions. Going into the program, I had a lot of things I wanted to make or say or talk about, but never a legitimate platform to make them happen. That’s one of the reasons I fell so in love with this program is because this is a place to make the things you want to happen actually exist. Like, for example, in the Fashion part where we had to make our own clothing line, we would’ve never made a brand we were proud of if no one in my team put their ideas out there for discussion. That also goes back to the route of The New York Times itself is that, like our final project, there would be no journalism if people didn’t put their ideas out there and open themselves up to new experiences.

What was your favorite part of the course?

365体育备用网址My favorite part of the course had to be the people. I would’ve never had such an amazing time in and out of class if I wasn’t surrounded by some of the most creative and interesting people in the world. Each person in the course brought something interesting to the table, thus making the course different, like ingredients in a recipe. You have the pot you’re cooking in, for example the syllabus, and each person whether it be a teacher, RA, or student is a new ingredient, creating this wonderful and unique experience for each person. Everyone in my class, like myself, was really passionate about the subjects up for discussion and provided a unique point of view, along with being amazing people I had the pleasure of becoming friends with.

Did you have any favorite site visits or guest speakers?

365体育备用网址Mood Fabrics is one of, if not the most famous fabric store, making countless appearances on Project Runway and recently on Rupaul’s Drag Race. It’s one of those stores you would never know existed if you weren’t looking for it. The store itself is a labyrinth of materials with endless walls of every type of fabric you can imagine. We got to meet the owner of the store, see the new shipments from brands like Calvin Klein and Oscar de la Renta, and pick out fabrics we would like swatched for us to keep. It was amazing because when we got back to campus, we designed our own fashion brands for our final projects using the fabrics we saw as inspiration.

What was your final project?

365体育备用网址We had to work on three different final projects that went along with the three different course topics, which each brought their own set of challenges. First, we had to write, film, produce, and edit our own 3 minute short film to show in front of the class. No one really tells you how much work goes into making a film and how much work actually goes into producing a movie, let alone a short film. For the fashion section, we had to create our own clothing brands and present them to the class, including the target customer, our financial plan, why the brand should exist, and 6 unique pieces that best show off your brand. That was my favorite of the three projects due to how creative we could be with the clothing and how you really could create any brand you wanted.

Who do you think should take this course?

365体育备用网址This course is perfect for people who love to be creative, collaborative, and curious. When I think back to all the people in my course, the one common theme that brought all of us together was this creative drive to create and explore these areas of artistic expression that we all had a fondness for.

What were your faculty like?

365体育备用网址Our course leader was one of the best teachers I’ve ever had. His name was Gordon and every morning he would start us off with a half hour or so of free writing, just to get our creative juices flowing and to start the day off in a nice way. He really knew a lot about writing and how to edit and rework your pieces so that every time you look at your work, there is something new you didn’t notice before. The guest teachers we had, were all amazing as well, with each of them being legitimate professionals in their field. Harris, an actor turned filmmaker, writes and produces his own short films and used his prior knowledge to try and teach us. Swati, founder and CEO of her own fashion brand, runs her own clothing line and knows everything there is to know about creating and running a business on your own.

What do you think you want to be when you grow up?

365体育备用网址It’s always changing for me. One of the things I’ve always said is regardless of what I want to do professionally, it needs to be something that’s not only creatively fulfilling but that makes me happy. I love to make things, whether it be food or art or clothes, and would love to find a career choice that would let me be as creative as possible and always keep me thinking and developing different outlets for self expression.
