Elinor is a Summer Academy student from San Francisco, California and took our course, 'Political Commentary and Opinion.'

Why did you decide to study at The School of The New York Times?

365体育备用网址I knew I had to do something to spend my time this summer, and one of my friends a while back told me how much I would [enjoy] this program with an organization I appreciated.

Which course did you take and why?

365体育备用网址I took the Political Commentary and Opinion writing course because I wanted to be able to research and be in a place with people who had lots of opinions like I did

If you had to name one thing that you learned from your time here, what is that one takeaway that will stay with you?

365体育备用网址I think the most important thing I learned was from our teacher, Elizabeth Williamson. She told us, in an age where everyone is saying things to say them, to make everything we say matter.

Who was the most memorable guest speaker?

365体育备用网址I think the most memorable guest speaker we had was Hannah Qiu, a fact checker for The Times, who came in and talked about what it was really like doing a job like that. Not only talking about the professional aspects, but also how it affected her home life, for example, having to watch Trump rallies at home, and how her boyfriend would have to leave the room because he was so tired of it.

What were your faculty like?

365体育备用网址My instructors were extremely knowledgeable, not only in their field, but also in their influence. They knew that we valued what they thought, and so they made sure to disclaim any opinion they expressed, making sure that we valued our opinions and thoughts over theirs. Our main instructor had been all over the world and reported in dangerous areas and had tons of experience in writing and made sure we got the full experience of what it was like to craft our own pieces.

What does The New York Times mean to you?

365体育备用网址The New York Times to me is an institution set on telling the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth. To me, The New York Times, and newspapers like it, is essential to the preservation of democracy.

What does it mean to you to study in Washington DC?

365体育备用网址Studying in Washington DC meant I got to see my family, it meant that I got to be at the heart of all things political in my country. I meant I got to talk to people who know the system, who work in it. It was special.

What do you think you want to be when you grow up?

365体育备用网址I’m sixteen years old. I’m going to be completely honest, I don’t know what I really want to be. However, this program showed me a path I hadn’t really considered before.
