Why did you come to The School of The New York Times?
I came to The School of The New York Times mostly because I love to write. It’s funny because I actually find writing really difficult; it doesn’t always come naturally to me but when it does it’s one of the best feelings ever.
Which course did you take and why?
365体育备用网址I took the Investigating Digital Innovations course because I didn’t know much about the course subject. I thought I’d go in knowing a little bit about it, but it turns out I wasn’t the slightest bit aware of everything that goes into ethics of the digital world and technology today.
What are your key takeaways from the course?
My one big takeaway or lesson from my course is one of responsibility. Living in a time when technology is so powerful and accessible means that we need to not only be aware of, but also be prepared to take responsibility for all of the downstream effects that all forms of tech inevitably have.
Did you have any favorite site visits or guest speakers?
My favorite guest speakers were Greg Hochmuth, one of the founders of Instagram, Surya Mattu, a data reporter, and Dennis Mortenson, founder of x.Ai. These stand out as highlights to me because in the short time I had with each of them, they really helped shape my interest in the tech industry. Every single person we came across during the class was not only very obviously super intelligent, but also, whether they knew it or not, offered some lesson unique to themselves.
Did you work on a final project?
Our final project for the class was to create an app with a group of 2-3 other students. It sounded pretty simple when we were first presented the project, however it became increasingly clear that none of us understood just how much work t was going to be. We basically had to do everything except code the app, including multiple pitches, wireframes, and user models.
Who do you think should take this course?
365体育备用网址This course is perfect for anyone who really loves to learn. I’m not a particularly techy person, in fact it’s kind of surprising how un-techy I am, but I really, really enjoyed this course due to the fact that I love to learn about new topics, especially ones that are so relevant today.
What does The New York Times mean to you?
365体育备用网址The New York Times is an icon. A staple of news and information that has proved itself again and again over the years. However The New York Times has a more personal meaning for me now. To me The Times is synonymous with learning. Now, after my experience at the School of The New York Times, whenever hearing about, or reading, or talking about The New York Times, I’ll always be reminded of my two weeks at Fordham.
What does it mean to you to study in New York City?
Typically I’m pretty open minded, but not about this: New York City is without a doubt the best place to learn. The city holds vast amounts of history, culture, and art of a hundred different kinds, and to me that’s what learning is all about. To be in New York City is to be surrounded by an infinite amount different ideas, opinions, and theories, some of which you’re bound to disagree with. And in my experience that’s when the best learning takes place, when we consciously choose to explore what might make us uncomfortable.
What do you think you want to be when you grow up?
When I grow up, I want to know what I want to be when I grow up. Honestly, what I want to be has changed a couple dozen times, and it’s liable to change a few dozen more. The course I took during my two weeks at the SoNYT program helped a ridiculous amount by effectively opening my eyes to the tech industry and all its facets. Although my ideas for what I want to be when I grow up are in a little bit of a limbo at the moment, my interests roughly lie in the computer science/design sector now, largely due to the course I took.
