What were your favorite site visits?
My two favorite site visits were our classes trips to Citi Field where we watched a [baseball] game, and to MLB.com/Statcast offices where we got to go inside [Major League Baseball]’s replay room and talk to some executives from Statcast who are pioneering the future of baseball through analytics. One of the Statcast people we got to meet—Mike Petriello—was actually the host of a podcast I listen to, which was amazing. Furthermore, former MLB player Fernando Perez came and talked to our class and that was fantastic because he not only had good insights about the future of baseball and his experience playing, but also was very motivational and encouraging with regards to our future in sports.
What was your final project?
365体育备用网址My final project was an analysis of the 2011 draft class in which we tried to identify potential reasons why players might have had success based off the talent level of their high school. There were also some other really cool projects from my class that reevaluated players through improving evaluation models such as +/- in hockey or the 20-80 scale in baseball.
What were your faculty like?
365体育备用网址The faculty was fantastic. Our teacher knew what seemed like anyone could ever want to know about baseball statistics, and was very open to hearing everyone’s opinions and helping them develop their own theories. Our other teacher was very knowledgeable when it came to math and was very helpful with any calculations or math we needed to understand to further our knowledge of sport.
What does it mean to you to study in New York City?
Studying in New York City was fantastic because of the diversity I was able to see. Also, it was a great place to study because they were so many places to go and things to experience like Central Park or MoMA, as well as, my own site visits where I was able to learn about culture and sports.
What did you think of the academic resident assistants (RAs)?
365体育备用网址My RAs were some of the best parts of the program. They could answer any of my questions and made me comfortable at the beginning of camp. They represented role models who had recently gone through the period of high school I’m currently going through and can give me tips about my future and college.
