Why did you decide to study at The School of The New York Times?
The idea of studying abroad and making connections with people from the other side of the world excited me. I wanted to be able to say that I made it to NYC alone; it was such an amazing opportunity.
What course did you take and why?
I took Creative Writing in NYC. I’ve always had a fascination with how words— when sewn together on a page— can trigger an emotional response from the readers and I wanted to learn how to do this. I also have a passion for poetry. It’s like a coping mechanism for me, a way to get my feelings out of my head onto a place I can look at them and understand why I’m feeling the way I am.
If you had to name one thing that you learned from your time here, what is that one takeaway that will stay with you?
You don’t need to be close to people location-wise to be really great friends with them. I plan to keep in touch with many people from the SoNYT despite the distance.
What was your favorite site visit?
I loved Williamsburg in Brooklyn. I felt safe there, almost like I was back home in Melbourne.
Who was the most memorable guest speaker?
Bethany Ball, a published author. I enjoyed listening to her outlook on writing. She shared some really great advice about the writing industry and on how to focus on finishing the writing process.
What was your faculty like?

What does The New York Times mean to you?
365体育备用网址The New York Times is so far away, but will always be so close to my heart. It was an escape, but also a destination I never knew I wanted to be a part of until the start of 2019.
What does it mean to you to study in New York City?
365体育备用网址It meant more to me than anyone could start to understand. I’m a 17-year-old from Down Under, who got the chance to travel alone to the Big Apple. It was such a dream. I am extremely thankful for everyone I crossed paths with.
What do you think you want to be when you grow up?
365体育备用网址I hope to be an Editor at Penguin Books.
