Her conversations with leading scientists and political figures are the basis of two widely read books on the art of the interview, “Scientific Conversations” and “Interview.” She teaches a journalism course for scientists at Columbia University’s Earth Institute.

Before joining Science Times in 1998, Dreifus was a contributing writer to The New York Times Sunday Magazine, bringing regular long-form narrative interviews to the newspaper for the first time in its history.
Previously, she had worked as an interviewer at Playboy, talking to heads of state and Nobel Prize winners, and before that as the Sunday “L.I. Interviewer” for Newsday.
Her two books on interviewing, “Interview” and “Scientific Conversations: Interviews on Science from the New York Times,” are classics of the field and are used in college journalism programs throughout the country.
Dreifus also teaches journalism courses at Columbia University’s School of International and Public Affairs and contributes to The New York Times’s weekend Opinion section, The Atlantic, Smithsonian, Audubon and The Chronicle of Higher Education.
