In “How to Think and Write Like a Critic,” five top critics of The New York Times shared their expertise on such topics as the importance of cultivating your inner critic, the research and reporting that goes into reviews, time management, how to collaborate with an editor, how to hold your writing to the highest standards, and how to produce a tough but respectful review. They examined the fundamentals of reviewing, including how to offer both close-up observations and broad ideas. They recommended books, magazines, newspapers and web sites that critics should peruse.
